|
|
To make better sense of the notes that follow I recommend the reader see my Shravaka, of that which Gautama also heard (four posts), 2006.
For an illustrated version of the current post see the Buddhamata blog version here.
1. Re. viЕ›udd. It is interesting to note the emphasis evinced in the Sanskrit root Е›udh (purity) on removal, clearing, cleansing and purification, the end result being that of an "absence" (even of effort), a hollow shell perhaps capable only of passively floating down stream...
2. I note this particularly as contrasted, say, to the Chinese rendering of path as dГ o (йЃ“), but which inherently maintains an active force function, a Е›akti if you will, a principle/power of existence (sat) AS bliss (ananda), or "virtue," Chinese de (еѕ·), which is furthermore inclusive of knowledge (cit).
3. Can such trans-cultural metaphoric mixing ever be resolved?
4. Thus in the Chinese classic Dà o De Jing (道德經), typically rendered as "the way and its virtue/power," the primary characteristic or quality of the path (dà o) is conceived as a participatory force or de (德), and which as "virture" is furthermore likened both in sense and semantics to Sanskrit vira (strength) and Latin vir (virile), both implying bravery and heroism.
5. Nor can Sk. virah be overlooked, 'to abandon, desert, relinquish, leave, to be solitary, lonely, separate or free from' – in which case the stream itself is all there is, and the man thereof and immersed therein is merely washed away, or perhaps washed up.
6. Yet whatever the case, it would probably have been more metaphorically consonant for the canonical editors to have spoken in terms of a "sota-viЕ›uddhi-panna," as traditionally the river (or a useful section of its bank, Sk. tД«rtha) was the place where ascetics performed their ablutions.
7. Note also the mixed, rather jolting metaphor in "Sotapanna-phala," someone eating fruit whilst floating down a river (maybe).
8. Yet again, the aesthetic fact that Ељrotapanna is both poetically viable as well as potential, conveys in a virile undermining manner the need to resuscitate the Ељravakavrata and before too long re-inaugurate its rightful pre-eminence and valour above and beyond all delimits of B (not to mention J).
