The common Samkhya scheme of evolution of matter says, tanmatras evolve from the tamasa-ahamkara, known also as bhutadi. Different representations of the cosmic evolution are given in the commentaries to YS I.45, ІІ.19, ІІІ.15, III.40, ІІІ.44, ІV.13-14, etc.
Recently I've come upon a Vedantic account of Harsananda, former president of the Ramakrishna Match, Bangalore, in his Dictionary of Advaita-Vedanta, second revised and enlarged edition 1995. Strikingly, jnanendrias are defined as parinata (evolutes) from the sattvika part of the tanmatras.
Here is the scanned page:
I would appreciate any comments on the possible roots and origins of such a theory of evolution.
