    TOSHIHIRO WADA
GANGESA AND MATHURANATHA ON SIMHAVYAGHRALAKSANA OF VYAPTI
in: Journal of Indian Philosophy, August 1997

    INTRODUCTION

The present article is a continuation of section IV of a previous article by the same title. This section contains a translation and analysis of the Simhavyaghralaksana chapter of Mathuranatha’s Tattvacintamanirahasya, which is a commentary on Gangesa’s Tattvacintamani. The content of the other sections is as follows:

In section I.2.I explained the relation among definition’ (laksana), definiendum’ (laksya), and invariable concomitance (vyapti) to such
an extent that readers can understand the discussions presented in the Tattvacintamani and the Tattvacintamanirahasya. Section II demonstrates
the method of illustrating the structures of the definitions of invariable concomitance. Sections III presents a translation and analysis of the Simhavyaghralaksan. a chapter of the Tattvacintamani. The following is a summary of the texts included in section III (a single text with no number), section IV (texts 1 to 3), and the present article which deals with texts 4 to 6.

One must look at the work of Cornelius Goekoop published in late 1970's as The Logic of Invariable concommittance in Gangesha's Tatvacintamani. He covers Vyaptivada and Anuman prakarana well. Staal has given the preface. The work of Guha also narrates it. BK Matilal also comments on it.
The scope of fire with respect to location and cause with extent of fire is an issue that he highlights. One must look at instrumental cause and material cause in the given boundary with P(Paksha) H(Hetu) and Sadhya(S). Do we construct a process of inference (anuman) from given P,H and S? Are direct H's enough to prove indirect S's ? How does one relate goals (i.e S's) that are backward chained ? Can we synthesize western and eastern logics ? Can we put it in object logics used in OOPs (Object Oriented Programming Systems ?
I guess many PhDs and post docs are worth these investigations. Any takers for these interdisciplinary researches with Navya Nyaya, Mathematics, Programming backgrounds ?
